When in person, instructors and facilitators rely on their intuition and observations to gauge engagement—tracking who has spoken, asked questions, and contributed—all while managing the classroom and delivering impactful instruction. This is already a challenge, but in a virtual setting where 70% of virtual instructor-led learning is delivered on video conferencing platforms, where access to the same non-verbal cues is limited, it can be even more difficult to truly understand participation and engagement levels.

Class is unveiling Learner Engagement Scoring, first-of-its-kind real-time analytics that helps facilitators identify, measure, and respond to learner participation in virtual learning and training programs.

Addressing the engagement gap in virtual learning

With Learner Engagement Scoring, organizations can now turn participation into measurable insights, identifying at-risk learners and optimizing virtual instruction in real time. By analyzing key usage metrics—such as talk time, attendance, chat activity, and emoji reactions—Class delivers an at-a-glance engagement score that enables instructors and administrators to take immediate action during live sessions to improve the effectiveness of instruction.

Learner Engagement Scoring is designed to address one of the most pressing issues in online education and corporate training: limited visibility into learner participation.

With Learner Engagement Scoring, organizations can:

  • Track learner participation instantly with a composite score that includes talk time, attendance, chat activity, emoji reactions, and more.
  • Identify at-risk learners early and intervene when it matters most. Instructors and administrators can drill into individual engagement metrics.
  • Use real-time engagement data to refine learning strategies, adjust instruction dynamically, and ensure learners stay engaged.

Powered by learner participation data in the virtual classroom

Learner Engagement Scoring leverages a range of participation metrics, weighted to reflect their significance in the learning experience. High-impact metrics such as attendance, word count, screen sharing, and receiving stars contribute the most to engagement scores. Moderately weighted factors include talk time, hand raises, public chats, and reactions, while lower-weighted metrics like focus and video usage provide additional context.

Learner engagement is categorized into three levels: High Participation (green), for those performing above the class average; Medium Participation (amber), for those at the class average; and Low Participation (red), for learners who may need additional support. These insights refresh every 30 seconds during live sessions, ensuring that instructors always have the most up-to-date information to tailor their approach and to make targeted improvements in real time that maximize engagement.
